We are home after a long day of doctors and driving, and while it was fun to get away, I am always so happy to walk through our door and settle in to my own bed.
This is a short post after the novel I wrote last night, sorry about that! We had good news today at Shriner's Hospital. After about 18 or 20 xrays and a very thorough exam, it was determined that there was no need for surgery at this time. In fact, while the examining MD could see that something was wrong, she admitted that she wasn't very happy with her conclusions and wants to see Matthew again in 6 months. Her thinking is that the corrective measures thus far have worsened the problem by over correcting rather than lessening it, and she ordered custom orthotics to see if that makes a difference. She thinks that maybe his huge growth spurt this year of 4" is behind some of the leg pain he is experiencing, but reiterated she is not really happy with that explanation either. So, while we don't have any bad news, there are not firm answers either and we will try the orthotics and see if that helps.
That medical exam is behind us, and we have Kenny being seen at Shriner's in Chicago in 2 weeks to determine the results of his recent surgery. Having whacked himself right in the face about 3 weeks ago as he ran around in the dark in our back yard, we are hopeful that no damage was done to the bone graft site. It's always something...
A grateful end to a weekend of true thanksgiving. Good night!

Excellent - it is also great you seem to have a good doctor up there. Good luck with Kenny's - nothing quite like Chicago this time of year! Best, Vegas
That is good news about Matthew! One step at a time.....no pun intended! Hoping that Kenny gets a good report in Chicago too!! Sending you all many hugs!!
No surgery is good news! Chicago, huh? Hmmm....I don't suppose you could start being seen in Minneapolis could you?
Cindy-my daughter had rickets as well and still experiences odd and random pains from time to time (enough to bring her to tears or wake her up at night). The only explanation we've been given is that they are growing pains, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that that is not true. The fact is, not a whole lot is known about the long term effects of malnutrition on our kids. It is just now being studied for the first time, and only by a select handful of doctors. Most docs know very little about it. Glad to hear Matthew doesn't need surgery! Mishelle
It sounds like you have a good start on getting Matthew the help he needs. Chicago? So soon? Do you need a kid sitter daytime while you are gone? I can do it (I think).
Holding my breath,

So glad for no need of surgery...praying that Shriner's in Chicago is full of good news too!
xoxoxo
Great news the Matthew doesn't need surgery! What a relief, though I know there's still searching to be done to help him. I don't know if you have a chiropractor who can do molds and send in for orthodics, but our local, small town chiro does. He was way cheaper than the podiatrist, whose "bedside" manner was very condescending. We used him for our first flat-footed daughter. All four from Guatemala now also have flat feet. Our son's knee troubles were cured with his arch supports. I need to get on the next one and make an appointment for her. Their knees will hurt if their feet are rotating (pronating, or something like that) when they walk. Best wishes for Matthew and also for Kenny, as he bravely faces another surgery.
You hit the nail on the head so often about the issues our kids face, Cindy. I don't always have the time to comment, but you can bet I relate to much of what you say about the deep and buried hurts and issues yet to be uncovered and discussed.
